PNC patents the environment - community blog from Paul Penrose

Watch out banking eco-warriors, PNC Financial Services in the US has patented the term 'Green Branch', with reference to its network of 40 environmentally-friendly bank branches across six states. The Pittsburgh-based bank claims to have more certified, environmentally-friendly buildings than any other company on earth.

"Consumers want to do business with socially responsible companies and PNC is leading the way in the banking industry," trumpets Neil Hall, head of retail distribution, PNC Bank, in a press release celebrating the patent.

According to PNC, a main reason for the Federal Patent Office's approval of the bank's trademark application is that financial services are not generally associated with environmentally friendly or ecologically efficient characteristics.

Steelers tell jokes, share tales at 75th year gala

As a global entrepreneur who specializes in investment banking with Laurel Mountain Partners, Andy Russell was on a business trip to Russia several months ago when he spotted something familiar.

At an outdoor mall in Moscow, next to a nesting doll that traced Russian leaders from Vladimir Putin to Vladimir Lenin, he noticed a similar object adorned in the black and gold of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This doll started with Jack Lambert, then inside was Joe Greene, Franco Harris, Terry Bradshaw and Lynn Swann in descending order, each figure smaller than the one preceding it. Imagine that, stalwarts of the Steel Curtain merchandised on the free market in what used to be the epicenter of the Iron Curtain.

"There weren't any other football teams or American figures displayed, just this one.

Decision on health insurance merger at least a year away in Pa.

Pennsylvania Department of Insurance officials said Tuesday they do not expect to render a decision on the proposed merger of Independence Blue Cross of Philadelphia and Highmark in Pittsburgh until the summer or fall of 2008.

Joel Ario, the department's acting commissioner, testifying before the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee, said the completion of the review "depends on numerous factors outside the department's control."

Those factors include getting Highmark and IBC's response to requested information, obtaining experts to review the data and respond to issues raised during public hearings the department plans to hold -- but has not yet scheduled.

The boards of IBC and Highmark of Pittsburgh voted March 28 to merge the two companies and create the state's largest health insurer.
