Steelers tell jokes, share tales at 75th year gala

As a global entrepreneur who specializes in investment banking with Laurel Mountain Partners, Andy Russell was on a business trip to Russia several months ago when he spotted something familiar.

At an outdoor mall in Moscow, next to a nesting doll that traced Russian leaders from Vladimir Putin to Vladimir Lenin, he noticed a similar object adorned in the black and gold of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This doll started with Jack Lambert, then inside was Joe Greene, Franco Harris, Terry Bradshaw and Lynn Swann in descending order, each figure smaller than the one preceding it. Imagine that, stalwarts of the Steel Curtain merchandised on the free market in what used to be the epicenter of the Iron Curtain.

"There weren't any other football teams or American figures displayed, just this one.

PNC patents the environment - community blog from Paul Penrose

Watch out banking eco-warriors, PNC Financial Services in the US has patented the term 'Green Branch', with reference to its network of 40 environmentally-friendly bank branches across six states. The Pittsburgh-based bank claims to have more certified, environmentally-friendly buildings than any other company on earth.

"Consumers want to do business with socially responsible companies and PNC is leading the way in the banking industry," trumpets Neil Hall, head of retail distribution, PNC Bank, in a press release celebrating the patent.

According to PNC, a main reason for the Federal Patent Office's approval of the bank's trademark application is that financial services are not generally associated with environmentally friendly or ecologically efficient characteristics.

Business Diary

Brown Gibbons Lang & Co., the Cleveland-based investment banking firm, has reconfigured its ownership structure, shifting from a closely held operation to a limited liability partnership. Michael Gibbons, now senior partner, said the reorganization "basically means that I bought out my partner in Chicago and sold those shares to various people in the firm." Gibbons now has 13 partners and may have two others soon. Gibbons, who said he's "excited about the change," started his investment banking career with McDonald & Co., a broadly held partnership, "and that's the way we structured this." Under its new ownership structure, Gibbons said, Brown Gibbons will keep the same name at its offices in Cleveland, Boston and Chicago. And, Gibbons said, the firm may open an office in Los Angeles.

Bayer drops drug plan

Bayer AG said Monday that it will take a charge of about $218 million from a decision to abandon plans to market a bigger dose of its multiple sclerosis treatment Betaferon. The company said that Bayer Schering Pharma AG, a unit set up after its acquisition of Schering AG in 2006, found in tests that a 500-microgram dose of Betaferon was no more effective in preventing relapses by patients who suffer from MS than the 250-microgram dose of Betaferon or that of Copaxone, which is produced by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.

Federal regulators plan to throw out exclusive cable TV service contracts with apartment buildings and open up competition to phone companies. The new rule, which could significantly lower cable prices for millions of subscribers who live in apartments, is expected to be approved Wednesday by the Federal Communciations Commission.

DOT Seeking Opinions On Business 40 Improvement Plan

The N.C. Department of Transportation has been seeking public input on proposed improvements to Business 40 in downtown Winston-Salem.

Specifically, the department is studying whether Business 40 should be closed completely for up to two years or whether it should be partially closed for up to six years while construction is under way.

DOT teams have been handing out surveys door to door, gauging opinions on the project from residents who live outside the downtown area, as well as those who travel to Winston-Salem from outlying communities. .
